Extraordinary Relief Engraved Gold Inlaid Prussian J.P. Sauer & Son Double Barrel Boxlock Ejector Shotgun -
Serial no. 133020, 12 gauge, 26 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This is a beautiful and one of a kind example of a masterfully relief engraved and gold inlaid shotgun. The muzzle and breech ensd of the barrels and the breech end of the rib are nicely engraved with relief floral vine designs. The frame, break lever, and triggerguard are
engraved with relief floral vines. In addition the left side of the frame has a wooded scene of a gold inlaid capercaillie in display and two gold inlaid hens, the right side has a marsh scene with a gold inlaid peregrine falcon attacking two gold inlaid ducks and the underside has a wooded scene with four snipes. The triggerguard also has a marsh scene with three gold inlaid egrets. Each side of the frame is marked “J. P. SAUER & SON” in a banner and the lower tang is marked with the relief engraved serial number. The top of the barrels near the breech are marked “SPECIAL - GUN/ BARREL STEEL” 3 ring logo “FRIED KRUPP, A.G./ESSEN” Single brass bead sight on the solid concave matte rib marked “J.P. SAUER & SON.” in an oval panel. The barrel flats and underside are marked with various proof marks, the matching serial number, Prussia. “13/1” and “12” in a circle. The watertable is marked with an eagle and “crown/U” proof mark, “MADE IN PRUSSIA” and the matching serial number. Double triggers, tang mounted automatic safety with gold “SAFE”, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors. Mounted with a nicely figured multi-point walnut forend with floral design relief engraved hardware and pistol grip stock with floral relief engraved grip cap, leather covered recoil pad, and gold initial shield. Bores measure .721 (right) and .720 (left), the wall thickness is .045 (right) and .047 (left), the bore constriction is .000 (right) (Cyl) and .017 (left) (Mod). Length of pull is 14 3/4 inches. Drop at the comb is 1 1/2 inches, drop at the heel is 2 5/8 inches.
