Stunning Exhibition Quality, L.D. Nimschke
Identified Panel Scene Engraved, Gold Plated Smith & Wesson First Model (Model 1891) Single Shot Pistol with Pearl Grips - Serial no. 18072, 32 S&W cal., 6 inch
solid rib bbl., gold finish, pearl grips. This is a highly impressive
example of only one of 229 Model 1891’s chambered in .32 S&W that Smith
& Wesson manufactured from 1893 to 1905 (see Supica and Nahas’“Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson,” page 111), showcases an exceptionally fine scroll and panel scene engraving. Exquisite English type scrollwork with double line bordering
is featured on the rear section of the barrel, top strap, frame and trigger guard. Engraved wide floral bordering accents the right side of the frame
at the grip and recoil shield. Additional floral type patterns adorn the sides of the trigger guard. The side plate features a finely detailed panel scene engraving depicting a solo buffalo hunt on horseback out on the western plains. The high grade, turn of the century artistry is certainly worthy of being exhibited at any of
the numerous international fairs held at the time. A smoke pull of the panel scene is found in R.L. Wilson’s book “L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver” on page 69. With
the exception of the blued sights and barrel latch, the revolver is plated in gold. Matching serial numbers are found on the front strap, barrel, and barrel latch. The revolver is fitted with equally attractive extended pearl grips. Per S&W historian Roy Jinks this pistol is “open on the records, no configuration or shipping information available.” The First Model Single Shot was a favorite among target shooters including the U.S. Olympic Team and was used along with its Second and Third Model successors for many years in target matches spanning the globe.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 98% plus original gold plating showing faint muzzle wear and a small spot of worn gold on the right side of the frame. The engraving is crisp. The attractive pearl grips are also excellent with minimal handling marks and highly attractive fiery colors. Mechanically excellent. An exquisitely
engraved S&W, one of the finest known to exist and a worthy addition to any high art firearms collection!
Provenance: The Dr. Gerald Klaz Collection; The Ernie Rice Collection.
Estimate: 14,000 - 22,500
